A Career Path to Coordinating Architectural Design Projects

Written by Annie Pierson | 2/15/22 2:01 AM

An architectural project coordinator plays an essential role in any real estate project. In an interview with DesignBlendz’s Project Coordinator, Tim Knapp, he shares what a typical day in his role looks like, whom he works with day-to-day, and advice to anyone who is looking to become an architectural project coordinator in the design profession.

A Typical Day as a Project Coordinator

A typical day for a project coordinator will ultimately depend on the current stage of each project, as they are instrumental in both the design and construction phases. At the beginning stages of a project, managers will consult with clients, ensure that construction meets environmental, safety, structural, zoning, and aesthetic standards, as well as determine and schedule building stages based on the client’s requests. During his interview, Tim Knapp explains that a typical day involves him working on schematic design, zoning analysis, putting together tasks for his team members, and actively communicating with co-workers and clients. Tim is a proactive leader who ensures that each project is completed successfully. By working one-on-one with each member of his team, staying in communication with clients, and frequently visiting construction sites, Tim keeps each project running smoothly.

Characteristics of an Exceptional Architectural Project Coordinator

Aside from having an interest in construction, design, project planning, and management; qualities such as excellent communication and problem-solving skills are what sets project coordinators apart from architects. Being able to effectively communicate with all parties involved is key to a successful project and an essential characteristic of a project coordinator. With poor communication, problems will inevitably arise. Although, problems are bound to come up regardless of communication; which is why a project coordinator must problem-solve efficiently. Taking the initiative to come up with a solution while caught in an issue may be troubling for some people, especially those with weak leadership skills. Being a strong leader is undoubtedly one of the most important characteristics of project coordinators, as they are responsible for task management and managing the time of those working on each task. Communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills can all be practiced and perfected over time, this should not scare anyone away from pursuing a career in coordinating architectural projects. However, being a natural-born leader, quick thinker, and skilled communicator will make it easier for someone to succeed in this field.

Advice to Anyone Interested in Architectural Project Coordination

Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture is an eminently challenging feat. Five years in school will often fly by, and there are things that individuals within the architecture field will look back on and wish they had done differently in that time period.  Tim Knapp was posed with the question “What is your advice to students who may be interested in becoming a Project Coordinator?” And he said,

“Really study up on zoning codes and building codes. If you can get an internship in a firm that will help a lot. Work in construction a little bit, you will learn a ton about how a building gets put together. I would do some task project management, project coordinating is a lot of managing other people’s time. And even if you have an excellent knowledge base of what needs to get done, unless you are able to communicate that to someone else you are not going to be successful.”

Taking on a leadership role, getting involved in construction projects, and practicing good communication skills are great places to start for someone looking to pursue a career in this field. Seeking out an internship at a firm is also a great opportunity to familiarize oneself with the design and construction process, as well as learn from experienced professionals.
